Tom Neugebauer
With a previous background in music, anthropology, and education, Tom “discovered” clay and his artistic talent in 1969. Between 1972-74, he studied in the Masters Program in Sculpture and Crafts at Teachers College of Columbia University. In 1974, he established a private studio in New York City with two fellow artists and from 1976-83 he lived and worked as Ceramics Artist in Residence at the Peters Valley Crafts Center in Layton, New Jersey. During his tenure there, he worked with and was influenced by many nationally-known ceramics artists, including Paul Soldner, Peter Voulkos, Toshiko Takeazu and Fawn Navasie.
In addition to his active career as a studio artist , exhibiting his work widely in galleries and at art
shows , Tom is also a respected teacher. He was Ceramics Instructor at the Visual Arts
Center of New Jersey in Summit, NJ from 1981 until 2016, and has taught courses in ceramics and special workshops at a number of art centers and colleges in the Northeastern United States. In
addition, he conducts workshops in Raku and special pit-firing techniques several times each
year at his studio in Milford, PA. Recognitions of particular note are his selection for two summers as Visiting Artist at Artpark (Lewiston New York, sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts), his receipt of a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant (1980), and his lecture tour and exhibition in Holland (1983).
He lives and works with his wife, Judith Neugebauer , a nationally known jeweler, at their home and studios in Milford, Pennsylvania.
