Emily Phillips

My work in general is inspired by forms found in nature, specifically the way the shapes of plants interact and can be simplified into more or less abstract interpretations. I believe that balance is a key component in the persistence and thriving capacity of nature, and it is the balance of many different forces dictates much of what we experience in the world. It is the concept and design principle of balance that informs and inspires my designs; it is also where my studio name, 'Fulcrum Jewelry', originates.

This body of work explores the affects that disease or insects have on the aesthetic quality of

plants, and questions objective botanical beauty as it relates to a general aversion to disease

and abnormality within standards of beauty. Utilizing precious metals or gemstones to highlight

the affected area of the plant, brings attention and perceived value to the abnormalities that

would otherwise be considered defect.

My work is functional as wearable jewelry, but I also aim to not just copy and recreate nature,

but to celebrate the qualities of plant life that may be underrated or unnoticed.

Emily H. Phillips attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and earned her BFA in jewelry and

metals. She combines her fine art education with the teachings of traditional metalsmithing to

create jewelry that excels not only in technical craftsmanship, but also in creative design and

unique perspective. Every piece in Phillips's collection is fabricated by hand from raw materials.

Solid sterling silver sheet and wire are cut, shaped, and soldered to create each unique design.

These pieces are all made with traditional metal smithing techniques and built to last.
